Road transfers route
Nairobi → Maasai Mara (Sekenani, Talek or Oloolaimutia gates)
The classic 5–6 h safari-van run across the Rift Valley — cheapest way to the Mara.
- Tour vans/4×4 operators, matatus to Narok, private transfers
- 5–6 h each way
- ≈ US$25 (matatu + transfer) · US$60–120 (shared van) · US$250+ (private 4×4)
The road is tarmac all the way to Narok and mostly tarmac onward to the Sekenani/Talek gates, though the final stretch deteriorates and is slow after rain. Most visitors take a pre-booked shared tour van or 4×4 with a driver-guide (often bundled into package safaris); independent travellers can matatu to Narok and negotiate a transfer or park gate pickup. The route drops down the Rift Valley escarpment at Great Rift viewpoint — stop for the view, guard your bags at the crowded stops.

Arrange through lodges, Nairobi tour offices or reputable online operators. If self-driving, a 4×4 is strongly advised; fuel up in Narok.
Good to know
Roadside stalls at the Rift viewpoint and Narok rest stops are tourist-priced; carry small KES notes. Night driving is unsafe — plan to arrive before dark.
