Road transfers route

Kigali → Akagera NP (south gate: Kayonza; north gate: Nyungwe/Kabara)

Two to three hours from the capital to Rwanda’s Big Five park — the easiest savanna day-trip in the region.

  • Private transfers, tour 4×4s, Akagera-arranged game drives
  • 2.5–3 h
  • ≈ US$60–120 (private transfer) · park drives from ≈ US$40

Tarmac to Kayonza, then a good dirt road to the southern gate. The park permits self-drive (2WD works on the southern tracks in the dry season) and arranges guided game drives, night drives and the Lake Ihema boat safari from the south. The full north-to-south transit — rhinos and lions north, hippos south — is a satisfying two-day loop ending an hour from Kigali airport.

Good to know

Fuel up in Kayonza — no petrol inside the park. The north gate exit puts you 30 min from the Kigali–Mwanza road into Tanzania.
